Headword: *)emfalkwme/nois
Adler number: epsilon,1066
Translated headword: ribbed-in (ones)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] wound-around [ones].[1] "Then with ribbed-in ropes they raised [it] from the topmost [part] by means of a scaffold".[2] Concerning a mechanical [battering-]ram.[3]
Greek Original:
*)emfalkwme/nois: peripeplegme/nois. e)/peita ka/lois e)mfalkwme/nois a)po\ tou= a)nwta/tw a)nh/rthsan dia\ ph/gmatos. peri\ kriou= mhxanikou=.
Notes:
[1] The headword is dative plural of this present middle/passive participle, presumably extracted from the quotation given. The verb e)mfalko/omai is otherwise unattested. LSJ s.v. gives no translation for it but does have a cross-reference under the noun fa/lkhs, 'part of a ship, rib'.
[2] Quotation (also in ps.-Zonaras) unidentifiable. This fragment is also Polybius fr. 136 Büttner-Wobst. Büttner-Wobst notes (532) that Valesius (Henri de Valois 1603-1676) attributed the fragment to Polybius. However, Schweighäuser rejected it, and Büttner-Wobst agrees that the fragment is unlikely to be Polybian (ibid.).
