Notes:
As in chi 209, the headword is the accusative singular of the noun xe/rniy, which never appears in the nominative. See also chi 211, and chi 212.
[1] That is, the acute accent is on the antepenult (xe/rniba), but in poetry, the acute is on the penult (xerni/ba). Despite this, the paroxytone form is not extant. This portion of the entry is taken from the scholia to Aristophanes, Peace 956 (where the headword appears: web address 1 below). See also Herodian the Grammarian 1.246, as well as Athenaeus Deipnosophists 9.76.
[2] Quotation, again at chi 213, unidentifiable. (Adler suggests one of her usual suspects, Aelian.) The form xerniptome/nous is a present middle/passive participle, masculine accusative plural, of the deponent verb xerni/ptomai ("I wash my hands").
