Translation: A Roman, who had spent countless sums of money on his stomach, in Kintouri [a city] of
Galatia[1] eating many shrimp, for they are bigger than the largest of those in
Smyrna and the lobsters in Alexandria. So when he heard that very large shrimp occur in Libya, he sailed out without waiting even one day. But once he had observed that they were small, he ordered the helmsman to sail back again the same way to Italy, not even approaching land.

Notes:
Nicholas Purcell in OCD(4) p.117, s.v. Apicius: 'proverbial cognomen of several Roman connoisseurs of luxury, especially in food, in particular M. Gavius Apicius (PIR(2) G91 [...] in the Tiberian period, i.e. early 1st cent. AD'. The collection of recipes transmitted under his name, however, is fourth-century.
The present entry's material, after the opening ethnikon, summarizes
Athenaeus,
Deipnosophists 1.7A-C (1.12 Kaibel).

[1] So again at
kappa 387 and
kappa 1649. But manuscript M has corrected this place-name in the present entry to "
Minturnae," the resort in Campania (not
Galatia) where, according to
Athenaeus, this Apicius resided. Paul Maas argued that manuscript M was the work of
Eustathius of Thessalonica, but Adler was not convinced (vol. 5, p. 273).
