Headword: Ἀμβολὰς γῆ
Adler number: alpha,1532
Translated headword: thrown-up earth, raised earth
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning earth] which was raised up by a ditch.
Xenophon [writes]: "Cyrus used to make towers on the thrown-up earth, so that there might be as many guardposts as possible."[1]
Look under "bitten" [δακνόμενος ], because housebuilding and raising horses and making mounds seemed expensive to the Laconians.[2]
Notes:
Likewise in ps.-Zonaras. The headword phrase, in the nominative, is presumably generated by genitive τῆς ἀμβολάδος γῆς in the quotation given.
