Translation: When this man seized power over the Romans he renewed the government towards greater severity and made it harsher, inasmuch as he had attained the hegemony by means of such deeds. He changed the laws and proposed magistrates contrary to custom and through them mistreated the people. He was especially warlike, being naturally suspicious and boastful; for this reason he acquired this sobriquet, for superbus is what Romans used to call the arrogant.
