Headword: Taricheuein
Adler number: tau,122
Translated headword: to pickle, to salt
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[with the future infinitive] tarixeu/sein: "just like those who cut eggs and are intending to pickle them." But it also means to dry [them].[1]
And as if to expel the juices [and turn them] into garum, as if [ta/rixos] were a sort of ga/rixos.[2]
They also say tarixhra/ ["salted [things]"]. Arrian [writes]: "he gave them grain and wine and salted meats per tent."[3]
Greek Original:
Taricheuein, taricheusein: hôsper hoi ta ôia temnontes kai mellontes taricheuein. sêmainei de kai to xêrainein. kai hoion eis garon exichôrizesthai, garichos tis ôn. legetai kai Tarichêra. Arrianos: ho de edôke siton te kai oinon kai krea tarichêra kata skênên.
Notes:
[1] Likewise in Timaeus' Platonic Lexicon and in Photius. It is unclear why the future infinitive is given, but the quotation itself comes from Plato, Symposium 190D (where however the better reading is o)/a "sorb-apples"). For the verb tarixeu/w, see also tau 121.
[2] cf. Herodian, Symposium, quoted by Orion [Author, Myth]; also Etymologicum Gudianum and Etymologicum Magnum. For this material cf. already under epsilon 1781, and again under tau 124. The purported noun garichos (ignored by LSJ) is apparently a grammarian's invention to provide an etymology for tarichos (tau 124). On garum (fish-sauce), see gamma 66.
[3] Arrian, Anabasis 4.21.10.
