Headword: Tuphêrea
Adler number: tau,1212
Translated headword: (made from) reed-mace
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] tempestuous[?]. "Wax-clad torch, reed-mace lamp of Kronos, bound with rush and delicate papyrus."[1]
Greek Original:
Tuphêrea: tuphônikên. lampada kêrochitôna, Kronou tuphêrea luchnon, schoinôi kai leptêi sphingomenên papurôi.
The headword adjective, accusative singular, is presumably extracted from the quotation. For reed mace, Typha angustata, see generally LSJ s.v., citing Theophrastus, Strabo and Diocurides. The import of its glossing here is not clear.
[1] Greek Anthology 6.249.1-2 (Antipater of Thessalonica), the gift of a candle for Piso, copied from here to pi 268; cf. Gow and Page (38-39) and a further excerpt from this epigram at alpha 941. Antipater's patron was L. Calpurnius Piso, "the pontifex" (48 BCE - 32 CE, consul 15 BCE); cf. OCD(4) s.v. Calpurnius Piso (2), Lucius.
