Headword: Spongos
Adler number: sigma,953
Translated headword: sponge
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"[...] a sponge [which he] had as a wiper of reeds from [the] Cnidians."[1]
They say that Acco, who was stupid, pounded a peg with a sponge.[2]
Greek Original:
Spongos. spongon echein kalamôn psaistora apo Knidiôn. phasi tên Akkô môran ousan spongôi pattalon krouein.
Notes:
The headword, nominative singular, is probably presented as a general lexical reference. In the quotations that follows the accusative and dative singular forms are presented. For related words, see sigma 952.
[1] Greek Anthology 6.295.2 (Phanias), with some minor (but unmetrical) errors, also quoted slightly more accurately at psi 36. The subject is the offerings (consisting of writing paraphernalia) made by a writer to the Muses. Whether it is the sponge or the reeds that are "from [the] Knidians" is ambiguous. Find further extracts from this epigram at lambda 211 and sigma 214.
[2] The same anecdote has been presented, with more context, at alpha 946. Adler reports that this sentence is absent from mss AF and inserted after sigma 952 in V; it is probably extracted from that previous entry. Since Acco is a woman and pa/ttalos ('peg') a euphemism for the membrum virile, a sexual connotation is not to be excluded, but there is no trace of it in other attestations of the phrase "pound a peg with a sponge", which is generally applied to efforts that are doomed to failure; cf. Mantissa Proverbiorum 2.88; Aristaenetus, Epistle 2.20.
