Headword: Sapphô
Adler number: sigma,108
Translated headword: Sappho
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A woman of Lesbos, from Mytilene;[1] a harp-player.[2] This woman threw herself into the sea from the cliff of Leukates for love of Phaon of Mytilene.[3] Certain people have written that there is lyric poetry by her too.
Greek Original:
Sapphô, Lesbia ek Mitulênês, psaltria. hautê di' erôta Phaônos tou Mitulênaiou ek tou Leukatou katepontôsen heautên. tines de kai tautês einai lurikên anegrapsan poiêsin.
Notes:
[1] See already sigma 107. This "'other Sappho' was almost certainly the invention of a scholar who wished to save S.'s reputation" (David A. Campbell, ed. and trans. Greek Lyric I: Sappho and Alcaeus. Loeb Classical Library. Harvard University Press, 1982, p. 7). Manuscript A (Parisinus 2626), the oldest Suda manuscript, omits this entire entry, and Manuscript F (Cod.Laur.55,1) contains only the first sentence.
[2] "Harp-player" translates psaltria, in contrast to lyrike (lyre-player) in sigma 107.
[3] See further at phi 89. There the location is called the White (Leukas) Cliff, a name perhaps prompted by one of her own poems; see M.R. Lefkowitz, The Lives of the Greek Poets (London 1981) 37.
