Headword: Paianas
Adler number: pi,838
Translated headword: paeans
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] revels, celebrations.[1]
There were two paeans: Enyalios, when they began, which also used to take place before the battle; and another when they were winning.[2] [Note] that the ancients used to sing two paeans, before the war for Ares, and after the war for Apollo. But Thucydides says "as they were sailing forth" instead of "as toward beginning the war."[3]
Greek Original:
Paianas: kômous, euphêmias. Notes:
[1] = Eudemus 164b.16 Niese, Synagoge, Photius pi12 Theodoridis; cf. Hesychius pi44. The headword, accusative plural (cf. pi 837), is apparently quoted from somewhere, but not from the passages referred to in the next two paragraphs.
[2] Derived from scholia to Thucydides 4.43.3, where there occurs not the headword but a related aorist participle, paiani/santes. For Enyalios cf. epsilon 1498.
[3] Derived from scholia to Thucydides 1.50.5, with the introduction of a slight error in the quotation of Thucydides: w(s e)pi/ploun ("as they were sailing forth"), for the original w(s e)s e)pi/ploun ("as for the sailing forth").
