Headword: Protasis
Adler number: pi,2863
Translated headword: premise, proposition
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the questioning being proposed. But a 'problem' [pro/blhma] [is] a question that has been laid down as a problem. [Problem and question] differ only in the modality [sc. of the sentence], but they are [sc. equally] constituted out of contradictory propositions.
[Note] that[1] 'problem' and 'premise' are indicators of the same things and are in the same things; and their difference consists only in the modality of the mode of expression as the phrase goes.[2] For the same question accompanied by what was said before is a 'problem', whereas accompanied by 'a)=ra/ ge' ["is it ... ?"] [it is] a premise.[3] And dialectical problems and dialectical propositions are the same [sc. in number].[4] A problem, for instance, [is] 'whether the world [is] spherical or not'.[5] But a premise [is] 'is the world spherical?" [In this case the expression] 'or not' is not added.
