A summary--perhaps, Adler supposes, from FGrH 104--of the famous story in Herodotus 6.105-6; see also iota 545, pi 214.
In Herodotus the man's name is Philippides (as here) in some mss, 'Pheidippides' in others. The latter is the name of a character in Aristophanes, Clouds.
