Headword: Onomastos
Adler number: omicron,374
Translated headword: named, to be named, notable, famous
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] great.[1]
Also [sc. attested is the expression] ou)d' o)nomasto/s, [meaning] he who/that which cannot be said, he who/that which is great.[2]
"There a lion rushed along the path, a terror [even] to bold men, but to Gallos [or: to a gallos] an unspeakable distress."[3]
Greek Original:
Onomastos: polus. kai, Oud' onomastos, ho mê rhêthênai dunamenos, ho polus. tou de leôn ôrouse kata stibon, andrasi deima tharsaleois, Gallôi d' oud' onomaston achos.
Notes:
[1] The headword is a verbal adjective from o)noma/zw.
[2] If this phrase is the quotation that Adler took it to be, its source is uncertain: perhaps Arrian, Anabasis 6.11.6 on Gaugamela (though, if so, the glossing is inappropriate); perhaps the epigram about to be quoted (where it occurs in the accusative). The very similar ou)k o)nomasto/s occurs in Homer (in the feminine accusative singular) and in Hesiod (in the masculine nominative plural).
[3] Greek Anthology 6.220.7-8 (Dioskorides/Dioscorides), a Gallus drives away a threatening lion by beating his timbrel; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 85-86); (vol. II, 245-246); and further extracts from this epigram at epsilon 4078, theta 198, lambda 74, mu 1394, tau 1167, and theta 6. On gallos, see gamma 41.
