Translation: "All Achaea [is] your monument,
Euripides; surely [you are] not muted, but even worthy of mention."
Greek Original:Lalêteos: hapas' Achaiïs mnêma son, Euripidê: oukoun aphônos, alla kai lalêteos.
Notes:
Greek Anthology 7.47, attributed to
Thucydides the historian.
The poet seems to use
a)/fwnos 'having no voice' virtually as a passive, as
lalhte/os, the verbal formed from
lale/w clearly is. The verb
lale/w (
lambda 80) is used in later Greek not as 'chatter', 'babble', but simply as 'speak' or 'say'.
'Achaia' is, in the archaic way, Greece (cf.
alpha 4680).
