Translation: This man [was] an archon in
Athens long ago. He held office in the era of Dareios,[1] at a time when there was a heavy fall of snow and everything froze up, preventing anyone from travelling. Hence they used to call all cold things "Lakratideses".
Aristophanes [writes]: "for an ancient Lakratides the leg[s] are heavy".[2] That is, because of old age I cannot walk fast.
Lakratidês: houtos archaios archôn Athênêsin. êrche de epi tôn chronôn Dareiou, eph' hou pleistê chiôn egeneto kai apepêxe panta, hôs mê dunasthai tina proïenai. dioper ta psuchra panta Lakratidas ekaloun. Acharnians 220. Develin (below) 48 dates Lakrateides -- the most authentic version of his name -- to the period 521/20-512/11.
