Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Most people [use the term to mean] confined area or, generally, neighborhood, but others say that the demes within the city are called villages. Also [that] the demesmen within the city and, generally, those who live in the same district and part of the city [are called] kwmh=tai ["villagers"]. Aristophanes [uses the term] this way.[1] Thucydides, also, speaks of demes as "villages" in [book] 1: "[Sparta] was inhabited by villages in the ancient manner."[2]

Notes:
Same entry in Photius, Lexicon kappa1310 Theodoridis (q.v. for other references).
The headword, evidently quoted from somewhere, is the accusative case of the feminine noun kw/mh (kappa 2258). See also kappa 2260, kappa 2261, kappa 2262, kappa 2263.
[1] That is, Aristophanes uses kwmh/ths ("villager") in this way: Clouds 965 (web address 1); cf. Lysistrata 5; the headword itself is not attested in Aristophanes.
[2] An approximation of Thucydides 1.10.2 (web address 2).
