Headword: Konnou psêphon
Adler number: kappa,2048
Translated headword: Konnos' vote
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. A proverbial phrase] in reference to worthless people/things. Konnos was a lyre-player -- one of the ones without a voice, some say -- or in some accounts a kithara-player.
Greek Original:
Konnou psêphon: epi tôn oudenos axiôn. ho de Konnos lurôidos ên, hôs tines phasin, tôn aphônôn: hôs de tines kitharôidos.
Notes:
Aristophanes, Wasps 675, with scholion (the latter giving the variant *ko/nnou qri=on). Also in Hesychius and Photius -- but not, despite this glossing, in the paroemiographers.
This Konnos is perhaps to be distinguished from the inebriated piper Konnas (kappa 2027), though orthodoxy thinks not: see e.g. LSJ s.v. *konna=s.
Keywords: biography; daily life; definition; ethics; medicine; meter and music; proverbs
