An unexceptionable gloss: even rigorous modern scholarship -- exemplified in M.L. West, Ancient Greek Music (Oxford 1992) chap.3 -- is prepared to classify the several shapes of kithara as, broadly speaking, one of the two subsets (box-, as opposed to bowl-) of lyre.
