Translated headword: with a Gallian
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [Meaning] with [something] of the Galli.[1] "Having often offered, with the Gallian howl of Cybele, the cry, hard on the hearing, [that comes] from their mouths, she dedicated these tresses to the mountain goddess at her door, when she thus rested her foot hot from the raving."[2]
Greek Original:Gallaiôi: tôi tôn Gallôn. Gallaiôi Kubelês ololugmati pollaki dousa ton barun eis akoas êchon apo stomatôn, tasde theêi chaitas peri diklidi thêken oreiai, thermon epei lussês hôd' anepause poda.
Notes:
The headword, dative singular of a putative adjective *
gallai=os, is evidently drawn from the quotation that follows. The only other attestation of any form of the word comes in a poem by Gregory of Nazianzus (PG 37.1572.3) in a probable imitation of the poem cited here (
*gallai/hs *kube/lhs o)lolu/gmata ('howls of the Gallian Cybele')).
[1] Though 'Galli' (
*ga/lloi) can mean 'Gauls', in the quotation that follows the headword adjective refers to the Galli who were castrated devotees of Cybele; see
gamma 41.
