Headword: Êlitoergos
Adler number: eta,251
Translated headword: missing work, deed undone
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] one who is failing in the deed/task. "So [the snake] died deed undone."[1]
Greek Original:
Êlitoergos: ho tou ergou apotuchôn. hôs thanen êlitoergos.
Notes:
The headword is probably otherwise unattested, although the LSJ s.v. notes the possibility of a dubious reading in a papyrus text of Alcaeus.
[1] Greek Anthology 7.210.7 (Antipater of Sidon), of a mother-bird whose nestlings were killed by a snake; cf. Gow and Page, vol. I (32), vol. II (84), and further excerpts from this epigram at alpha 687, epsilon 3246, eta 525, kappa 1654, and tau 390. The previous lines (at kappa 1654; see n.1 thereto for an English translation of the complete epigram) account for snake's ironic demise.
