Headword: Dekazesthai
Adler number: delta,173
Translated headword: to bribe by tens
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[A term] coined from the practice of corrupting with bribes in groups of ten [kata\ deka/da]. For when certain people wanted to acquire an official position or to influence anything else, they gave things to groups of ten men, to make them their collaborators. From this, with someone taking the money for the sake of collaborating while the best person [to do so] is not present, they call the practice "bribing in tens". Similar to bribing in tens is canvassing for office [e)riqeu/esqai]. That is because "canvassing" comes from paying a wage.[1]
