Headword: Dragmata
Adler number: delta,1490
Translated headword: handfuls of uncut corn, trusses
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] first-fruits.[1]
"Heronax consecrated [sc. to the Satyrs and Bacchus] as the first handfuls of his planting these triple casks from triple vineyards."[2]
Greek Original:
Dragmata: aparchai. Hêrônax prôta dragmata phutaliês trissôn oinopedôn trissous hierôsato tousde kadous.
Notes:
The headword is possibly extracted from the quotation given, though there are numerous alternatives (in e.g. Homer, Callimachus, Theocritus and the Septuagint). Same headword but different glossing in Hesychius, Photius, and elsewhere. In any event the noun, from the same root as the verb dra/ssomai 'pluck with the hand, reap', should be distinguished from the feminine nouns from the same root and of the same original meaning, dragmh/, draxmh/.
cf. under alpha 1481, theta 238.
[1] For this glossing term cf. generally alpha 1002.
[2] An approximation ('first' should be genitive, agreeing with 'planting') and abridgment of Greek Anthology 6.44.2-4 (perhaps by Leonidas of Tarentum), on Heronax's libations to Satyrs and Dionysus; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 137), (vol. II, 391-392), and other extracts from this epigram at kappa 24 and omicroniota 139. In ritual contexts, the headword seems to refer to the handful of wheat (or other cereal) first reaped, a sense extendable to the wine first poured from the grapes first harvested. The meaning of 'triple' is not clear here, but presumably has ritual force.
