Headword: Dôdekakrounon stoma
Adler number: delta,1441
Translated headword: twelve-spouted mouth
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
For Cratinus praised himself in Putine saying: "Lord Apollo, the springs of the flow of verses resound, a twelve-spouted mouth, I would say Ilissos in the throat, will inundate with words unless someone stops up his mouth."[1]
Greek Original:
Dôdekakrounon stoma: ho gar Kratinos heauton epêinesen en Putinêi legôn: anax Apollon, tôn epôn tou rheumatos kanachousi pêgai, dôdekakrounon stoma, Ilissos en têi pharungi an eipoimi, ei mê epibusei tis autou to stoma, kataklusei tois logoisin.
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Knights 526, where Cratinus' flow of language is mentioned. (The Suda's introductory 'For' (ga/r) echoes the scholiast, whose main point -- omitted here -- is that in his opinion Aristophanes' phrase did originate in Cratinus' boasting.) See also delta 1440 (and iota 321 for the Ilissos).
