Notes:
See Herodotus 7.133-7 (web address 1) and, in the Suda, under xi 54 (where there is a note on the proper form of name "Sperchis").
Both here and again at sigma 924 they are called Athenians; they were in fact Spartans. (The mistake could not have been made by anyone who had read Herodotus for themselves.)
