cf. generally alpha 3683.
[1] Procopius, History of the Wars of Justinian 8.18.18 (web address 1); cf. kappa 2197 and Kaldellis (503). The emperor Justinian (cf. iota 446) in 551 CE reproaches the Utigur Huns (Turkic equestrian nomads living east of the Sea of Azov) for remaining idle as the Cutriguri (Kutrigurs, Cotrigurs; related to the Utigurs, but living west of the Sea of Azov) pillaged the Danube River frontier. See also kappa 547 and pi 2797.
[2] Aristophanes, Clouds 1007 (web address 2 below); cf. already alpha 774 and again mu 1058. What now follows comes from the scholia on this line: see next note.
[3] The present headword as a botanical name is duly registered by LSJ s.v., IV, but Aristophanes of Byzantium (the authority for the scholiasts and Hesychius here) probably got this wrong; see Dover's edition ad loc.
