Son of Menecrates; from Nysa[1] on his father's side, but from Rhodes on his mother's side. Philosopher. A pupil of the philosopher Posidonius,[2] and his maternal grandson and successor as head of the school in Rhodes. He wrote Lives of Famous Men; and Successions of Philosophers; and Life of Greece in 4 books, according to some.[3] He also wrote On Rhodes.

See generally RE Iason(11). Gercke (1907) points out that the father cannot be the grammarian Menecrates of Nysa mentioned by Strabo (14.1.48), though he is presumably a member of the same family (on which see also Heath [1998]).
