Adler number: nu,192
Translated headword: Neokles, Neocles
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Athenian, philosopher, brother of Epicurus.[1] [He wrote a work] in defence of his own school.
The [phrase] 'live unobtrusively' is Neokles'.[2]
Greek Original:
*neoklh=s, *)aqhnai=os, filo/sofos, a)delfo\s *)epikou/rou. u(pe\r th=s i)di/as ai(re/sews. o(/ti *neokle/ous e)sti\ to/, la/qe biw/sas.
Notes:
[1] Mentioned by Diogenes Laertius 10.3. For Epicurus see generally epsilon 2404. Since E.'s father was also called Neokles, this present Neokles was evidently the eldest (of four brothers).
[2] cf. Julian, Letter to Themistius 255b Bidez-Cumont. The point is evidently polemical: others attributed the phrase to Epicurus himself or else to Democritus. At any rate it became proverbial (lambda 41; Philostratus, Life of Apollonius of Tyana 8.28; etc.), and Plutarch devoted an entire work to it (Moralia 1128Aff), entitled Whether the phrase "live unobtrusively" is well said.
