This is proverbial, like the sayings of the Seven Sages.[1] Pindar and Alcaeus mention it. Similar to it [are] "the office reveals the man",[2] "steer your own course"[3] and "know thyself".[4] Alcaeus says it is said by Aristodemus the Spartan, but Pindar by a certain man named Argeios, referring [to Aristodemus] like this.[5] Aristodemus is counted among the [Seven] Sages by some people.

Chrêmata, chrêmat' anêr: hautê apophthegmatikê estin, hôs ta parangelmata tôn hepta sophôn. memnêtai autês Pindaros kai Alkaios. homoia têi hôs kai archê andra deiknusi, kai tên kata sauton ela, kai to gnôthi sauton. lechthênai de autên Alkaios men hupo Aristodêmou tou Spartiatou phêsi, Pindaros de hupo tinos Argeiou to onoma, houtôs legôn. ho d' Aristodêmos enkatarithmeitai tois sophois hupo tinôn.
