The Greek form of Zarathustra's name has evidently been influenced by a)sth/r "star": according to Diogenes Laertius 1.8, 'Deinon in the fifth book of his History says that Zoroaster, literally interpreted, means star-worshipper, and Hermodorus says this too'.
[1] This ethnic adjective is otherwise unattested (and not in LSJ).
[2] alpha 4257.
[3] According to Diogenes Laertius 1.2, 'Hermodorus the Platonist in his work on mathematics gives the date of the Magoi, beginning with Zoroaster the Persian, as 5000 years before the fall of Troy; but Xanthus the Lydian reckons 6000 years from Zoroaster to Xerxes' expedition.'
