Headword: *za/leukos
Adler number: zeta,12
Translated headword: Zaleukos, Zaleucus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A Locrian from Thurii,[1] Pythagorean philosopher and lawgiver, who died fighting for his homeland. This man was previously a slave and a shepherd; and having been fully educated he gave laws to his fellow-citizens. Amongst these was the one concerning women going to the marketplace: the free woman would wear white, and would have one maidservant amongst her household, but the others [would be dressed] in flowery clothes.

Notes:
'Probably the earliest lawgiver in Greece, perhaps c.650 BC' (OCD(4) s.v. Zaleucus). See also epsilon 3295.
[1] This double designation is confused. Zaleucus was from Epizephyrian Locri, near the toe-end of Italy. For Thurii, the settlement established on the site of Sybaris (significantly further north), see generally theta 418; its mention here is anachronistic as well as geographically incorrect.
