Headword: Ὑποζώματα
Adler number: upsilon,493
Translated headword: reinforcing-planks, undergirdings
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning the] timbers of the ship. Instead of saying "reinforcing-planks" the shoemaker, in jest, said "soups" to a cook, as being an expert in seasonings and soups. It was forbidden to export timber and pitch from Athens. The Spartans too had triremes, since certain islands were part of their empire. Aristophanes [writes]: "I inform against this man and assert that he is exporting, for the Peloponnesian triremes, soups".
