Adler number: upsilon,431
Translated headword: service-implement
Vetting Status: high
The [sc. same thing as] amongst us, which we use for defecation.[1]
But some say hamis ["chamber-pot"].[2]
Greek Original:
Ὑπηρέσιον: τὸ παρ' ἡμῖν, ᾧ χρώμεθα εἰς ἀπόπατον. οἱ δὲ ἀμίδα λέγουσιν.
[1] No such meaning of the headword ὑπηρέσιον is registered in LSJ s.v., where the senses given are cushion on a rower's bench, riding-pad or saddle-cloth, rowers' pay, and as an equivalent of ὑπηρετικὸν πλοῖον ; cf. generally upsilon 415, upsilon 416. The sense here seems to derive from ὑπηρέτης "servant, attendant" (upsilon 432) where the connection with rowing (ἐρέτης , ἐρέσσειν ) has been forgotten.
