A proverb in reference to those who have grown old.
Greek Original:
Ὑπὲρ τὸν κατάλογον: παροιμία ἐπὶ τῶν γεγηρακότων.
Ancient "rosters", katalogoi, served a variety of purposes, but the commonest was to list men of an age (and physical fitness) for military service. For the phrase ὑπὲρ τὸν κατάλογον as proverbial, see also Photius (upsilon146 Theodoridis) and several of the paroemiographers. Its earliest attested appearance -- but without proverbial overtones -- is in Demosthenes 13.4 (web address 1).
