Headword: Ὕπαρ
Adler number: upsilon,155
Translated headword: waking vision
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] truth, not [sc. experienced] in a dream.[1]
A daydream.[2]
Of the kind [sc. manifesting itself] openly, truly existing.
“'You narrate to me my dream'; I seem to be relating your vision”.[3]
A daydream is called waking vision; because [it is something] manifestly existing, true. [The word is formed] by cutting off the last syllable, the -χον .[4]

[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica; references at Photius upsilon75, where however Theodoridis obelizes the transmitted ἀλήθεια , i.e. nominative case, and endorses the dative ἀληθείᾳ (in one of the mss of Cyril).
[2] Similarly in other lexica, including Apollonius' Homeric Lexicon, cf. the scholia to Homer, Odyssey 19.547.
[3] Julian, Epistles 108 (claiming the first clause as proverbial).
[4] Doubtful etymology: see Hofmann s.v., according to whom the word might be formed out of analogy with the word ὄναρ . Chantraine, however, supports the view of Frisk that this was an old noun with an r-stem, related to ὕπνος "sleep."
