Headword: Ὕβρις
Adler number: upsilon,14
Translated headword: violence, insolence
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Sc. a condition of] being somewhat heavy;[1] or from raining [ὕειν ] heav[il]y [βάρος ].
Greek Original:
Ὕβρις: ὑπόβαρός τις οὖσα: ἢ παρὰ τὸ ὕειν βάρος.
Notes:
Purporting to be etymologies for ὕβρις (cf. upsilon 15, upsilon 16).
[1] cf. Etymologicum Magnum 774.19, which however says οἷον ὑπόβαρίς τις οὖσα , "as if some hypobaris" (a feminine noun); the Suda's ὑπόβαρος , not in LSJ, is otherwise unattested and probably a mistake.
