Adler number: theta,65
Translated headword: the interest runs quicker than Heraclitus of Perineum
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
This man was marvelled at for speed. So the proverb is used of those borrowing at interest.
Notes:
Anonyma Dorica fr.20 Kassel-Austin; Zenobius 4.35, etc.
The qualifier attached to H.'s name is obscure. No toponym called Perineum/Perinaium is otherwise attested (and it might, rather, be a patronymic: DW), but Buehler p. 337 emends the transmitted Περιναίω (Περινέω in the Suda) to Τεριναίω . For Ter(e)ina, in Bruttium (S. Italy), see Barrington Atlas map 46 grid D4; and for the ethnikon Tereinaios cf. [Plutarch], Lives of the Ten Attic Orators 845C.
