Headword: *qusth/rion
Adler number: theta,621
Translated headword: frenzy-maker
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning something that is] a stimulator.
Greek Original:
*qusth/rion: to\ o(rmhth/rion.
Note:
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras and, according to Adler, the Ambrosian Lexicon (433). The headword -- shown by the gloss to be neuter nominative/accusative singular rather than masculine accusative singular - -- is otherwise unattested, but probably related to an epithet of Dionysos, *qusth/rios, defined at theta 494 as being derived from the verb qu/w in the sense of o(rma=n ('stimulate', 'excite') rather than its more common sense of 'sacrifice'; but cf. also theta 623.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; ethics; religion
