Θαρρελείδης: Σύμμαχος: Ἀσωπόδωρος. Διδυμαχίας, ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ, ἐπὶ σμικρότητι διεβέβληντο τοῦ σώματος.
Notes:
From a scholion on Aristophanes, Birds 17; cf. alpha 4193, delta 868, delta 879.
The names vary somewhat, but this form is confirmed by an Athenian list of war-dead of 410 BC (IG i/3 1186.47).
[1] The editor of the Aristophanic comedies (AD 100). He identified this 'Tharreleides' with a certain Asopodoros called Κολοιὸς by another Old Comedy poet (Teleclides fr. 50 K.-A.). However, there is no evidence that ancient scholars knew this Asopodoros as son of Tharreleus. Moreover, the scholia disagree over the reference of Tharreleides in the context of the verses, so that the modern reader cannot fully understand this joke.
