Headword: *qespieu/s
Adler number: theta,279
Translated headword: Thespieus, Thespian
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A river. Also [sc. attested is the genitive plural] 'of Thespians'; and [nominative plural] 'Thespians'.
Greek Original:
*qespieu/s: potamo/s. kai\ *qespie/wn: kai\ *qespiei=s.
Note:
This entry brings together three grammatical forms of 'Thespieus', a citizen of the Boeotian polis Thespiai (theta 276, theta 277, cf. theta 278). The gloss 'a river' is thus almost certainly a mistake: one manuscript has 'a place' (topos), but better is Bernhardy's emendation of potamos to polites, 'a citizen' (cf. alpha 26 and passim).
