Some call this city Pylai. But Philaias[1] says that it is called Thermopylai, since Athena made hot baths for Herakles there.
In the Greek the distinction is between Gates and Hot Gates.
cf. theta 248.
[1] Philaias (or Phileas) is cited by the Suda's source, Harpokration s.v. Thermopylai (an entry generated by Isocrates 4.90), as the author of a Journey Round The World.
