Translation: When the Romans were campaigning against the Carthaginians 'they picked out the best men from their land armies and divided the total force into four parts; and each part had two names. For [the first] was called First Army and First Squadron, and so on accordingly. In addition the fourth had a third name: for they were called tried-and-tested, after the usage in the land armies'.
