Headword: *to/pos paragge/lmatos diafe/rei
Adler number: tau,784
Translated headword: a commonplace differs from an instruction
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
An instruction is the commoner and more general and simpler expression, from which a commonplace is derived; for the instruction [is] a beginning of a commonplace just as the commonplace [is] of an attack. Such an instruction is something expressed thus, that it is necessary to begin an attack [on an opponent's contention] on the basis of the opposing coordinate assertions, but it is a commonplace if the contrary position is often opposed to the contrary, or if the contrary turns out to be the contrary to the contrary;[1] and again, as is one of the coordinate assertions, so are the rest. For a commonplace is now a kind of protasis derived from the instruction.

Notes:
cf. already tau 783. The present entry also derives from Alexander of Aphrodisias (135.3-10), here commenting on Aristotle, Topica 109a34 ff.
See the discussion in Slomkowski [below] 62-67 of a paragge/ma. Marcelo Boeri suggests we define paragge/ma as 'an instruction or precept based on a previous investigation', thus expressing more explictly Slomkowski's suggested 'investigation-instruction'.
[1] For discussion of 'contraries' in this context see Slomkowski 57, 65, 142-3.
