Headword: *ti/nein
Adler number: tau,640
Translated headword: to pay a price
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to hand over.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] ti=ne ["pay a price, pay recompense, render"], [meaning] give up.[2]
Greek Original:
*ti/nein: dido/nai. kai\ *ti=ne, a)podi/dou.
Notes:
The headword is the present active infinitive of the verb ti/nw, I pay a price; cf. epsilon 3321, epsilon 3322, epsilon 3323, and see generally LSJ s.v. Theodoridis (see next note) declares it to be quoted from Homer, Iliad 3.289 (web address 1), for which see already tau 603 (end).
[1] The gloss is the same form as the headword, but from the verb di/dwmi, I give freely, hand over; see generally LSJ s.v. (and cf. tau 642). Identical glossing in the Synagoge (sigma183) and Photius' Lexicon (tau313 Theodoridis, with other references including a scholion to Aeschylus, Agamemnon 822 (web address 2).
[2] The supplementary lemma is an alternative spelling, with circumflex accent on the iota (accentuation attested only here), of the present active imperative, second person singular, of the headword verb ti/nw (see primary note); cf. Etymologicum Magnum 759.10 s.v. *ti/nw and Hesychius s.v. tinnei=n. The supplementary gloss is in the same form, but from the verb a)podi/dwmi, I give up; see generally LSJ s.v. [In her critical apparatus Adler reports that mss AFV read a)po/dide, apparently a misspelling -- one unattested apart from these same lexicographers -- for the second person singular imperative of the supplementary glossing verb; cf. Smyth ยง416.]
