Headword: Timêma
Adler number: tau,608
Translated headword: valuation
Vetting Status: high
Meaning security; apotimema, in effect. As Lysias says: "these men claiming that they had contracted for more and had established a valuation".[1] This he calls an apotimema in what follows. [The word timema] is also found with the meaning of, in effect, capital; so Demosthenes in the [speech] On the Symmories.[2] Timema is also applied to the income accruing from property from each [individual].[3]
"Having set valuations on the properties, in accordance with their capacity in each case, he introduced a most just form of government".[4]
In the [speech] Against Meidias, though, it is said of punishment.[5]

[1] Lysias fr. 137 Sauppe (now 189 Carey OCT).
[2] Demosthenes 14.19 (web address 1).
[3] Harpok. cites Demosthenes 27.7 as an instance of this.
[4] Not in Harpok. (but already in tau 606). The source of the quotation is unidentifiable but it reappears post-Suda in Georgius Cedrenus (C11), Compendium historiarum 1.261 -- and more fully there, revealing the individual in question to be the Roman King Servius Tullius.
[5] i.e. Demosthenes 21. Adler tacitly corrects to Demosthenes 20.155 (and J.J. Keaney followed suit in his edition of Harpok.), but unjustifiably: see Demosthenes 21.21 (web address 2).
