Headword: *th/meros
Adler number: tau,509
Translated headword: today, today's
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[*th/meros is the same as] shmerino/s. And it is applied to a body (?). But the [adverb] th/meron is said of time. And in Peace [sc. Aristophanes writes]: "io Lakedaimon, what will it do th/mera?". Meaning shmerinh/.
Greek Original:
*th/meros: o( shmerino/s. kai\ e)/sti tetagme/non e)pi\ sw/matos. to\ de\ th/meron e)pi\ xro/nou le/getai. kai\ e)n *ei)rh/nh|: i)w\ *lakedai/mwn, ti/ a)/ra poih/sei th/mera; a)nti\ tou= shmerinh/.
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Clouds 699, where the adverb th/meron (or th/mera) occurs. The spelling with tau is Attic; other dialects spell it with sigma (cf. under tau 496); either way, from *kya-.
The quotation does not appear in the texts of Peace, and that play-title might be an error for the lost Holkades: see Adler's apparatus. In any event it is Aristophanes fr. 296 Kock (now part of 420 K.-A.), and 'what will it do' should be 'what are you suffering'?
