[Meaning they] suffering misery. But some make a division, so that it becomes t' a)laoi/. Aristophanes in Birds [sc. uses it].
Greek Original:
*talaoi/: tlhpaqei=s. oi( de\ diairou=sin, w(/ste ei)=nai t' a)laoi/. *)aristofa/nhs *)/ornisi.
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Birds 687 (see web address 1).
This passage is the only attestation in classical literature of talao/s as an adjective (it occurs as a proper name), so some ancient critic has suggested reading t' a)laoi/ "and blind" (cf. alpha 1071). Modern editors retain talaoi/.
