Headword: Τεῖνον
Adler number: tau,451
Translated headword: extending, prolonging, stretching, tending
Vetting Status: high
Also [sc. attested is the related verb] τεινῳδάω , [which contracts into] τεινῳδῶ , a verb. From the [sc. notion of] extending the song.
Greek Original:
Τεῖνον. καὶ Τεινῳδάω, τεινῳδῶ, ῥῆμα. ἀπὸ τοῦ τείνειν τὴν ᾠδήν.
Entry lacking, Adler reports, in ms F.
Adler regards the unglossed headword as having come from Artemidorus 1.21, but surely there are likelier possibilities, e.g. Pindar, Nemean Odes 5.51 (which generated some scholia); also instances in e.g. Herodotus and Plato.
The verb τεινῳδάω is unattested outside the Suda (the related noun τεινῳδός is doubtfully attested in ps.-Zonaras).
Keywords: dialects, grammar, and etymology; historiography; meter and music; philosophy; poetry
