A proper name.
Greek Original:
*tafo/siris: o)/noma ku/rion.
Note:
More exactly a toponym. Taphosiris or Taposiris was the name of two cities ('Great' and 'Small') on the Egyptian coast, either side of Alexandria: Barrington Atlas Map 74 grids B3 and C2 respectively. Mentioned by Plutarch and others. The connection with Osiris (omicron 692, omicron 694) is self-evident; and Greek etymology explained the name as his burial-place (Procopius, On Buildings 6.1.12; Stephanus of Byzantium, s.v.; cf. generally tau 190, tau 192).
