Adler number: sigma,807

Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Plato considers [wisdom] in the most specific way as the science of things which are intelligible and really existing [o)/ntws o)/ntwn];[1] he says that such a science is concerned with god and with the soul separated from the body.[2] In a special way he calls philosophy wisdom, as being a desire of [= for] divine[3] philosophy.[4] But in a general way every [kind of] expertise for him is also called wisdom, as when he calls the craftsman 'wise'.

Notes:
Diogenes Laertius 3.63. The headword itself is in the accusative case, as already in sigma 805. See also sigma 806, sigma 808, sigma 809.
[1] This Platonic expression means 'real existence' and is more frequent in the later dialogues than in the earlier. See Phaedrus 247C & E; Republic 597D.
[2] *kexwrisme/nh ("separated"): frequently yuxh\ sw/matos ("soul from body"); cf. Republic 609D, Philebus 55E, Phaedo 67C, etc.
[3] *qei=os: sacred to a god, but also excellent, more than human.
[4] The lexicographer mis-remembers or mis-copies the noun here, adding confusion to the statement. D.L. says 'divine wisdom'.
