Headword: Σοβεῖ
Adler number: sigma,761
Translated headword: scares away, moves rapidly, swaggers
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] pursues, boasts.[1]
In the Epigrams: "and with much giggling you pursue the shining locks."[2]
Greek Original:
Σοβεῖ: διώκει, κομπάζει. ἐν Ἐπιγράμμασι: καὶ πολὺ κιχάζουσα σοβεῖς ἐς βόστρυχον αἴγλην.
Notes:
[1] The headword is third person singular, present indicative active, of σοβέω (cf. sigma 762). Identically or similarly glossed in other lexica, and in a scholion on Lucian (42.22 Rabe). It must be quoted from somewhere; perhaps Demosthenes 21.158, which generated scholiastic comment (though not precisely these glosses).
[2] Greek Anthology 5.251.3, inaccurately quoted: καὶ πολὺ κιχλίζουσα σοβεῖς εὐβόστρυχον αἴγλην . The translation here follows the original, as the Suda's version is untranslatable.
